This is IT

The last day. Crunch time. I went to my local Monster page and clicked the Earn what you deserve link. This plunked me into a Salary Wizard. Wonderful, that. I discovered that with where I'm living, and counting myself as either a tech writer or administrative assistant (a mush of both actually), the middle ground of what I should be earning is higher by a fair chunk than what I'm earning now. I wanted some figures so that if I get hauled into an office today for a talk, I can have some data of my own to throw back at them.

But then, I'm making this sound almost violent, aren't I? I'm not going to be rude or pushy. But, if 1/2 hour before my day ends they haven't talked to me, I'm going to have to say something. And if they aren't ready to negotiate, I'm going to let them know that this is my last day of my 6-month contract (I'm not going another day working here as a temp) and either something needs to be agreed upon or I simply am not coming in tomorrow.

Eek.

Anyone got any balls I can borrow?

I'd lend you mind but I don't think I could get them there in time... after all, you are on the other side of the country (or is it me who is?)

Good luck! There's no reason why you should just lay back and continue to work in an unhealthy environment for the same wage. If they want to make you permanent, you need a raise and a contract.

If they aren't interested then you could go out in a blaze of glory. It is ILLEGAL for there to be people smoking in a work environment. You could seek compensation in regards to health issues, and any stress / discomfot it has caused you.

I'm not normally the kind of person to urge someone else to "go for blood", but I would be pissed off if I had to work in an environment like that, regardless of whether they were going to keep me on full time or not. . .

You do have some options.

Go get 'em!

I'm a 'temp' tech writer too... now, how will it feel to be unemployed? that’s the question you have to answer for yourself. if you can’t deal with unemployment, then perhaps a little more diplomacy needs to attend the presentation of your desire for something other than ‘temp’ status... it's not about balls, it's about it being an employers market...there are just too many of us out there who need jobs...and they know it and won't hesitate to use it against you.

... but dont let ur fear of unemployment stop you from trying to find work in a healthier environment, with nicer people and at least normal pay. and always strive to d waht you like - i dont believe life has to be separated between doing work you hate and then doing what u like after work - do what you like for money! :)

In an IDEAL world, people would all be doing what we like for money. It's a wonderful concept, but not always attainable.

And then there are people like me who get an education in a field that will supposedly lead me to doing something I love for work, but it still comes down to the fact that for me, work isn't fun.

But, if you do feel that there are better opportunities out there for you to land a better paid, healthier job, then move on and good for you. I agree with Tom - Don't let the concept of unemployment petrify you into your current office chair.

I moved here with no job prospects and very little experience in my field, and I found a job in a month, and then moved up to a great job 4 months after that. There is work here. . . You wouldn't be unemployed for long, that's for sure.

Whew.. thanks for all the response! 2 hours to go...

Phil: I'm sure you can find a 2-hour courier... after all, friendship is priceless, right? ;)

Phoe: You are awesome. :) I love your point about unemployment petrifying me into my office chair. But what if they only are going to offer me $26 thou a year--do I have to say "no" and walk out? Feeling very nervous now... but you are right, I do have options. I have to remember that. And it's nice to hear what you overcame and now you are in a good position. Gives me hope.

Consensus-not: Hello. :) Wow, if ever there was a dad-lecture on this blog, that was it. In a good way of course. :) I should just find out what is wanted somewhere else, and be that (as long as it's something I'd like to be).

Tom, everybody, Everybody, here's Tom!
I hope to be doing what I like for money eventually, but right now I think it would be better in the short run to stay here and then in a year find something better... I mean, this is my first full-time job after all... But I definitely won't be here 25 years like some folk around here. Yikes.

Well folks, now my lunch is cold, so I better get back to hoovering my grub. :P

So, how'd it go? Did you talk with your employer?
