where to start

I'm now halfway through my maternity leave... time to start thinking about child care and going back to work, possibly finding a new job, or plain not going back to a full-time job. If Tomek, LB and I go to Poland this summer as we've tentatively decided to do, I won't be going back to my current job. I think I should go back because I made decent money there, and an extra income will only help our current situation. We are doing fine financially. If I go back to work, I'll only be making about $700 more per month than I'm getting from EI. Sigh. I know Tomek would like me to stay at home with LB... but the whole $ deal worries me.

And I'm sure, now that LB is 5 months old, that there are things I should be doing with her, things she should have, that I'm missing. Our doctor said to wait till she is 6 months to introduce her to solid foods, but I can tell she's interested now. It's so tough to know if I should follow my own instincts or a doctor's. I read in my baby book that they are supposed to check for certain things at each monthly check-up. LB's doctor just asks about her feeding, weighs her, checks her soft spot on her head and that's that.

And I have no idea how to keep our apartment tidy and no idea how to organize LB's room in the safest most practical way. GAH.

Good news though, it sounds like Tomek's parents might be buying a new vehicle and if their current van is still in ok shape, we will be able to buy it off them. Then Tom can finally get rid of his Talon and have a van which is what he's wanted for a while. The van is a '93 though... so I hope it lasts a while longer. I don't know though.

I wish I knew where to start with all this. I don't know how Mella does it... I really don't. But I admire her.

phx, youre worrying too much. if that little girl is happy and healthy then dont sweat small stuff. my brother started giving his son little bites at 4 or five months and then the kid would not go back to milk or formula. he wantssolids and he wants alot of it.

What to Expect in the First Year will give you tons of info that will answer most of this post.

With respect to solid foods, I'd say start now, with g we waited until six months but with c we waited until she was interested - like you're saying, and that happened to be early in the fifth month.

With respect to the money, that's the toughest part.

Go with your gut. In my opinion, doctors just give general diagnosis and advice that is not geared towards each individual child. That's why so many times my grandmother and mother told/tell me to "trust my instincts" when it comes to things with Katie.

Anyway, it looks to me like LB is thriving, so you've obviously been doing something right! :)
