Marcin came over to visit us at our new place a couple of days ago, and we got to talking about how wide hips don't necessarily mean the mom will have an easier time with birthing... the size of the space in the pelvis could be very wide in a person with very narrow hips, or very narrow in a person with wide hips. Then the convo switched to a friend of ours (ok, mostly mine) who has v. large hips. I don't consider her fat, she's just got very wide hips and the rest of her is kind of bulky too, but she doesn't jiggle or anything. I dropped the term "big boned", retaliating against them saying she's fat.
Marcin fixed me with a look and asked, "Did you ever see or hear of a big-boned person in Auschwitz?"
And that leads me to wonder, if all people, small and large, were emaciated and stood side by side, would we all be the same size?
Is the term "big boned" just a polite way of saying someone is overweight or fat? Because I never considered those terms interchangable.

What I've noticed more about people recently is their density, especially with kids. Since I am a parent of young children and so are quite a few of my friends, occasionally we make odd comparisons, for example, A is 2 years old and is almost exactly the same size as G who is 3.5 years old. When you lift A up, she seems to weigh a whole lot more as compared to lifting G up. I don't know what their weights are, but it is pretty clear that A is denser than G. Does that have to do with bigger bones, more muscle or more fat, I don't know.
Skeletal structure does have a bit of influence on width and girth. I've heard that wrists and ankles are good places to judge "big bonedness" because fat doesn't accumulated in those places as much as it does elsewhere. But, I'm thinking that the "big boned" theory only accounts for so much, like shoulder width, broadness of chest, and hip width.
my vet once called my cat 'big boned'.
everyone else calls her fat...
but to me, she's just husky.

i think some people must be built wider than other people. I mean..they can be built taller after all.
