Oh... shit

So I'm not going to the little big shindig that is tonight. I'm going to tutor, which is what I think is the right thing to do. But my co-worker (the one telling me I need to go or people will comment) tells me that the #1 told the #4 he needs to be there tonight. The #4 never goes to these events. Then she tells me that the #1 will be commenting if I'm not there--and there may be repurcussions.

Why can't there just be straight communication? Say in the last-minute-kind-of-invite email that it would be appreciated if all staff were present. How hard is that? None of this whisper whisper shit.

Now I can't wait for tomorrow to come... not.

GAH.

I'm pretty sure if it isn't spelled out, you don't need to be there. If #1 notices you aren't there, this means you are important enough, and if you are that important and are skipping, it is probably for a good reason (which it is). #1 can think about this, but probably won't for very long, so I don't think you should worry more than two or three iotas.

Thanks Phil--I think the womenfolk here relish blowing things out of proportion.... but it still has me a bit rattled. I just hope that if something is said, I'll have a chance to give reason why I wasn't there--but I know the receptionist and my manager and 2 women know the reason for me not being there, so we'll see.

All womenfolk everywhere (present company excluded) blow things out of proportion. Screw 'em... I mean, screw your coworkers figuratively. Of course, if you screw them literally then please post pictures.

As for the situation as a whole: I hate shit like this. Work bbqs, employee appreciation picnics, work holiday gatherings, Friday afternoon club. I want to skip out. Unfortunately, I look at my current job as my long-term career, and the reality is that these functions are an opportunity for me to bond with managers and make a positive social impression. Career jobs suck like that sometimes.
